UGC-CARE: A Quality Mandate for Indian Academia
In order to match global standards of high-quality research, in all academic disciplines under its scope, the University Grants Commission (UGC) towers to restoring and empower academia of India through its “Quality Mandate”. On November 28th, 2018, the government of India issued a public notice in order to set up to carry out this mandate a dedicated Consortium for Academic and Research Ethics (CARE).
Aims of the UGC-CARE List
- To promote quality research, publication ethics, and academic integrity in the universities of Indian.
- And the most important aim is to encourage high-quality publications in reputed journals in order to achieve higher global ranks.
- To develop an approach and methodology for the identification of good quality journals.
- To stop publications in sub-standard/predatory/dubious journals.
- To generate and maintain a “UGC-CARE Reference List of Quality Journals” (UGC-CARE List) for all academic objectives.
- The credibility of research publications is not only represented academic image but also the entire nation.
- The issue of predatory/sub-standard/dubious journals has become a cause of serious concern all over the world.
- Publication in globally reputed journals is one of the indicators considered for various academic purposes such as appointments, institutional ranking, membership of academic committees, promotions of faculty members, the award of research degrees, etc.
- The image of India is adversely affected by the poor quality journal publication, which damages the image not only of an individual but also the institution and the nation.
The Scope of the UGC-CARE List
- Preparation of “UGC-CARE Reference List of Quality Journals” (UGC-CARE List) is given to the UGC-CARE.
- UGC-CARE Group I: List of Indian journals from the disciplines of Arts, Humanities, Culture, Languages, and Indian Knowledge Systems is being prepared and updated quarterly.
- UGC-CARE List Group II: The journals Indexed in globally accepted databases such as Scopus and Web of Science
